Driver’s £70k Jaguar EV ‘goes rogue and starts flying down motorway at 100mph’

A driver has been charged after an “out of control” electric Jaguar was stopped on the M62 motorway by police officers. Nathan Owen, 32, reportedly called 999 and claimed he could not control his electric I-Pace. The driver stressed he couldn’t brake despite travelling on one of the country's most significant motorway routes, it is alleged.

The individual was arrested by Merseyside Police after the incident back in March 2024 and has since been charged with dangerous driving, causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud by false representation. The driver had apparently called the police while behind the wheel, saying that the brakes had failed on his electric car.

A statement from Merseyside Police said: “We have charged a man following an incident involving a black Jaguar I-Pace car on the M62 in March 2024.

“On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 6, officers from the force’s roads policing unit were called to help stop a vehicle safely on the eastbound carriageway after the driver called 999 reporting his vehicle was out of control and he could not brake while travelling on the M58/M57 and M62 motorways.

“Following an extensive investigation, we have charged Nathan Owen, 32, of The Grove, Prestatyn, North Wales, with dangerous driving, causing a public nuisance and two counts of fraud by false representation.”

Brand-new Jaguar I-Pace models are priced around £70,000 but costs can vary depending on the trim and whether motorists secure any optional extras.

It’s claimed that it took police officers a staggering 35 minutes for police officers to bring the vehicle to a standstill after the initial 999 call. It is understood the vehicle was travelling up to 100mph with Nathan claiming the model had experienced an electrical fault.

The car is believed to have been escorted onto the eastbound carriageway of the motorway.

The car is said to have been brought to a stop between Junction 11 for Birchwood and Junction 12 for Eccles.

According to the BBC, Jaguar Land Rover said it had launched an investigation in the aftermath of the incident.

Nathan is due to appear in court on Wednesday, August 13.

Jaguar has said they would not comment on a live police matter when they were approached for comment.
